Your Kid's First Barbershop Haircut: A Parent's Guide

Bringing your kid to a barbershop for the first time is a milestone. For the parent and the child. Here's how to make it go smoothly.

What Age Should They Start?

Most kids are ready for their first barbershop haircut between ages 2 and 4. If your child can sit still for 10-15 minutes, they're ready. Some kids are ready earlier, some later. No rules.

How to Prepare Your Child

Talk about it before you go. Tell them they'll sit in a big chair, the barber will use a buzzy tool that tickles, and they'll look really cool when it's done. Don't promise it won't be loud because clippers are loud. Just normalize it.

Show them videos of other kids getting haircuts. There are thousands on YouTube and Instagram. Let them see that other kids their age do it and are fine.

Timing Matters

Don't bring a hungry or tired kid. Schedule the appointment after a meal and during their best hours. Mornings work for most kids. Saturday morning is peak time at barbershops, so expect a wait, or come on a weekday.

During the Cut

Sit where your child can see you. Stay calm and positive. If they cry, it's normal. Your barber has seen it hundreds of times. Most kids stop crying within the first minute once they realize the clippers don't hurt.

Bring a tablet or phone with their favorite show loaded. Distraction is the most effective tool for ages 2-5.

After the Cut

Make a big deal about how good they look. Take a photo. Show them in the mirror. Build the association: barbershop = looking great = feeling great.

The Cost

Kids haircuts at Hollywood Cutters are $20. That's $15 less than an adult cut and takes about 25 minutes. We handle first-timers all the time. Walk-ins welcome.
